If you’ve ever had a crown or veneer, you probably remember the process. The dentist takes an impression, you wear a temporary for a couple of weeks, then you come back and hope the permanent restoration fits.
Most of the time, it fits fine. Sometimes the color is slightly off, the shape isn’t quite right, or your bite feels a little uneven. When that happens, the fix usually means another round of impressions, another temporary, and another wait.
At Aesthetic Dentistry Centre in Plano, the process works differently. They don’t send your crown or veneer to a lab across the country. They craft it in the same building, about 20 feet from where you’re sitting!
That clinical advantage is one reason patients from Plano, Frisco, Dallas, and across the DFW metroplex choose our practice for cosmetic and restorative work. Here’s what an in-house ceramic lab actually means for you.

What Most Dental Practices Do
Before we explain why our lab matters, it helps to understand how most practices operate.
When a dentist needs a crown, a veneer, or a bridge, they typically send the case to an outside lab. That lab might be in another state. It might be in another country. In many cases, machines mill the work rather than craft it by hand.
There’s nothing inherently wrong with this approach. It’s efficient, and it keeps costs down, but it also limits the dentist’s control over the final result. Once the case leaves the office, the dentist can’t oversee the process directly. They can’t adjust the shade in real time or ask the ceramist to make a small shape tweak.
When the restoration comes back, the dentist evaluates it. If something’s off, they send it back. If the patient doesn’t like it, they start over. That’s the standard model. It works well enough for most cases, but it’s not how we do things at Aesthetic Dentistry Centre.
What an In-House Ceramic Lab Changes
Our practice is one of the few in Texas with an in-building ceramic laboratory. Master Ceramist James Chung owns and operates the lab and works exclusively with Dr. Mark Sowell and Dr. Sara Chen on bonded ceramic restorations.
That setup changes everything about how your crown or veneer is made, such as:
- Direct Collaboration: Dr. Sowell, Dr. Chen, and Mr. Chung work together from the start of every case. They review the imaging and photography together, plan the wax-up together, and design the prototype together. The same team makes every decision about the shape, shade, and fit of your restoration, in the same room.
- Real-time Adjustments: If something needs to change during the process, they can change it on the spot. The shade might need to be slightly warmer, or the shape a little more tapered. The bite may need a small adjustment. Instead of sending the case back to a distant lab and waiting weeks, we make the change in minutes.
- Patient Approval Before Final Bonding: This is one of the biggest advantages. Mr. Chung is available at the final seating appointment. That means you get to see and approve your new smile before it’s permanently bonded. He can adjust anything right there.
That last point matters more than most people realize. Once a veneer is bonded, it’s permanent. You can’t take it off and try something different. Seeing the result in your mouth and approving it before it’s finalized is a real safeguard.
Why This Matters for Crowns
A dental crown covers the entire visible portion of a damaged or weakened tooth. It restores the tooth’s shape, strength, and appearance. Dentists use crowns for cracked teeth, large cavities, teeth that have had root canal treatment, and severely worn teeth.
For a crown to work well, it has to fit precisely. If it’s too loose, bacteria can get underneath and cause decay. If it’s too tight, it can put pressure on the tooth and cause pain. The bite has to feel natural. The color has to match the surrounding teeth.
An in-house lab makes all of that easier to control. Dr. Sowell and Dr. Chen can work directly with Mr. Chung to make sure every detail is right. And because the lab is in the same building, they can do it in real time.
Dr. Chen’s prosthodontic training is especially relevant here. Prosthodontists are trained to restore and replace teeth at a level beyond general dentistry. Only about 2% of dentists achieve that level of training. When a crown needs to be designed around a complex bite or a compromised tooth, her expertise makes a difference.
Why This Matters for Veneers
Porcelain veneers are thin, custom-made shells that bond to the front surface of your teeth. They can change your teeth’s shape, size, color, and alignment. Veneers are one of the most versatile tools in cosmetic dentistry, and they’re one of the most demanding in terms of artistry.
A veneer has to look natural. It has to match the translucency of the surrounding teeth. It has to fit precisely along the gumline and feel comfortable against your lip and tongue. It also has to work with your bite.
These details separate a natural-looking veneer from one that looks like dental work. An in-house lab can control them.
Dr. Sowell is one of only 40 dentists worldwide to have achieved both Mastership in the Academy of General Dentistry and Accredited Membership in the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. That combination of credentials reflects an unusual level of training in both general and cosmetic dentistry. He’s also a visiting faculty member at Spear Education, where he teaches other dentists advanced reconstruction and cosmetic techniques.
When Dr. Sowell designs a veneer case, he considers how the smile will look and function. The in-house lab lets him translate that vision directly into the final restoration.
Meet the Ceramist Behind Your Smile
James Chung is the master ceramist who runs our in-house lab. He works exclusively with Dr. Sowell and Dr. Chen on bonded ceramic restorations. He’s involved in every stage, from imaging and mock-ups to final fabrication and placement.
Mr. Chung’s presence at the final seating appointment is one of the things that sets our practice apart. Most patients never meet the person who made their crown or veneer. At our office, you do. If you want any adjustments, he can make them before bonding the restoration.
That level of collaboration between the dentist and the ceramist is rare. That collaboration lets us create restorations that look and feel like natural teeth.
Why We Don’t Outsource
Dentistry has shifted over the past few decades. Corporate dental chains have grown, and many practices have moved toward lower-cost lab services. Some send their work overseas. Others use machine-milled crowns that are faster and cheaper but often less precise.
We’ve chosen a different path. Our in-house lab costs more to operate. It requires a master ceramist on staff. It means we can’t take shortcuts, but it also means we can control the quality of every restoration we place.
For patients who care about how their smile looks and feels, that’s worth it. A crown or a veneer is an investment. It should look natural, feel comfortable, and last for years. That’s our goal with every case.
What This Means for You
If you’re considering a crown or a veneer, here’s what an in-house lab means for your experience:
- You’ll see your restoration before it’s final. You can approve the look and feel before we bond it.
- You’ll have fewer appointments because we can make adjustments in real time. We often avoid the back-and-forth that happens with outside labs.
- You’ll get a better fit. Direct collaboration between the dentists and the ceramist means the restoration is designed around your specific tooth, bite, and smile.
- You’ll get a more natural result. When the ceramist can see your other teeth in person, they can match the shade, translucency, and texture more precisely.
- You’ll know who made your restoration and might even meet him!
