Selecting A Dentist

We understand choosing a dentist is quite a personal issue, requiring thought and research. Of course the typical tried and trusted way is to ask for a referral from a friend, family member or co-worker. This will tell you the patient is satisfied with the dental office's services, but what if your friend has never really needed any dental work and sees the hygienist most of the time? In this case, a personal referral is only hearsay. Actions speak louder than words. Why not see for yourself by visiting a dentist's Web site.

Here are five things we suggest you look for while selecting a dentist through the Internet:

  1. Does the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry accredit the dentist? This credential will be difficult to find, because there are only 200 AACD accredited dentists in the world. But, being AACD accredited means your dentist is proven capable of making your smile beautiful and natural.
  2. Is the dentist a Master of the Academy of General Dentistry? This means he or she has extended their education into the 8 specialties of dentistry, indicating he or she contains a broad knowledge in all areas of dentistry. For you, this implies you will not need to be referred out to specialists as often because the dentist is trained and confident doing the work himself. There are 500 Masters of the AGD.
  3. Does the dentist use new technologies to improve your treatment and care? For example DIAGNOdent, uses laser technology to detect cavities even before they are visible to the human eye. Also, digital x-rays which reduce your radiation exposure by 76% over traditional x-rays. Monitored conscious sedation can make longer appointments more comfortable for the patient.
  4. Does the dentist have an in-house dental technician to custom create your veneers, crowns, onlays or inlays? When you want the best results, it is important for the dentist and ceramic technician to work closely together, make on-the-spot improvements saving time and visits.
  5. Is the practice certified by a third party organization in order to meet or even exceed all state and national infection control standards for your protection?

We hope you will consider this list of questions as you decide on a dentist. All the factors listed above are important in the process of picking a highly qualified and well-trained dentist.
