Dr. Sowell's Corner...
We are in the process of some exciting changes in the office. We are redecorating and we have finally hired a quality photographer to do portraits of some of our patients to go on our walls in the office. I have used 4 photographers in the last two years and not one of them where much better than I am, but when we found Vanessa, I knew we had found a creative artist. The first shoot was in down-town Dallas at one of the new high rise residential buildings in May. It took about an hour per person as we had a wardrobe/make-up artist along with a hairstylist. The setting was creative and everyone had a lot of fun. We took pictures by the pool, outside on the veranda and in a suite. Each person who participated received a portrait of their choice. All our patients ended up looking like models in magazines. The next photo shoot is on June 9th. I am excited to display these portraits in our office.
On a personal level our family had 3 graduations in May. My oldest daughter Erica graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a BS in Mathematics. My step-daughter Lauren graduated from Plano West and is headed to the University of Mississippi in the fall. My youngest son Nathan graduated from Plano and is headed to the Universtiy of Texas in Austin this fall. Lauren and Nathan graduated on the same day, so that was a pretty busy day for me. Soon we will be "empty nesters". It will be the first time in 24 years I have not had kids living at home full time.
Hygiene Corner...
Do you clench and grind your teeth? Most people clench and grind their teeth during sleep; this is called bruxism. Did you know that you can exert thousands of pounds of pressure on the biting surfaces of your teeth? This can lead to damage to your teeth and restorations. If it goes untreated, bruxism can cause a number of problems such as jaw pain, ear aches and headaches, loosened teeth, damage to bone that supports teeth, damage to your jaw joints and muscles, tooth sensitivity and worn down teeth. What causes bruxism and how do you treat it? Well, the biggest cause of clenching and grinding your teeth is stress. Other things that may cause clenching and grinding are a bad bite (malocclusion), spaces between teeth, or worn down teeth. The best way to prevent further destruction to your teeth is to wear a night guard (tanner appliance). You may also need to have dental restorations to correct your bite in order to avoid damaging tooth structure. Treating bruxism early can resolve the issue and prevent many possible future problems. Talk with us today to schedule an appointment if you suffer from this condition.
