Doctor's Corner
I want to thank my peers for electing me to the Texas Monthly Magazine's "Super Dentists." This is a peer poll of the best dentists in Texas. It is the third year in a row I have been given such an honor. Without a great staff and wonderful patients, this would not be possible.
THis month we also completed our secind session of patient portraits who volunteered to have their "after" pictures put up in the office. Vanessa is such a great professional photographer, she and her staff did a great job. I am excited to get the pictures up in the office. We are also doing some remodeling in the next few months, so don't be surprised if you see things rearranged. I look forward to seeing the final result when it is all completed in September. Keep smiling, Dr. Sowell.
A Hygiene Hello
Did you know that oral cancer is the number one cancer of the head and neck? There were about 30,000 new cases diagnosed last year in the United States. The most common risk factors are tobacco use, alcohol use, and prolonged sun exposure. Some signs and symptoms to be aware of are: a sore in your mouth that does not heal in 14 days, a lump or mass in the oral cavity or the neck that does not go away, and pain or difficulty swallowing or speaking. We want you all to know that at each of your hygiene visits we complete a full oral cancer screening of the head and neck region. This is done by palpation and visual examination of the cheeks, floor of the mouth, lips, tongue and throat. If it is caught early, it is usually very treatable. Your oral health is important to us, but we also want you to know that as health care professionals, your overall health is also important. We thoroughly enjoy working with each of you and will continue to screen for oral cancer along with periodontal disease and TMj disorders.
Other new in our hygiene department, I (Annilee) am expecting my first baby in December. Jeremy and I are very excited and look forward to this new chapter in our lives. We don't know if it is a boy or girl yet, but I will keep you posted!
Thanks for being such wonderful patients; you make our jobs easier and our lives richer! Annilee and Sejal
Recipe of the Month
This is a great summer treat! We always enjoy it at barbeques and as a refresher from the Dallas heat!
Strawberry Lemonade
- 1 Quart of Strawberries (4 cups)
- 3 C. Cold Water
- ¾ C. Lemon Juice
- ¾-1 C. Sugar (sweeten to taste)
- 2 C. Cold Club Soda
Blend the first 4 ingredients in blender, you can blend until smooth or if you want the strawberries chunky, that tastes great too! When the sugar is dissolved, add club soda! Serve and enjoy!
