The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry is pleased to announce that Dr. Mark Sowell, a dentist from Plano, Texas, has been awarded Accredited Member status by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry for Excellence in the Art and Science of Cosmetic Dentistry.
"Dr. Sowell has demonstrated a level of excellence in Cosmetic Dentistry. This certificate was earned by demonstration of exceptional skill and judgment before a panel of accredited dentists from across the United States," the Academy's Accreditation Committee states. Dr. Sowell is one of 230 dentists in the world who has passed the accreditation process, which is the only certification of its kind for Cosmetic Dentists to display their level of skill.
Recently the Plano cosmetic dentist was awarded a Fellowship in the International Academy of Dental Facial Esthetics for his contributions to cosmetic dentistry. Additionally, Dr. Sowell is one of 900 dentists in the U.S. to achieve the status of Master of the Academy of General Dentistry. This is the highest level of recognition for continuing education in the 8 fields of dentistry. With these two distinctions of excellence in both cosmetic and general dentistry, Dr. Sowell has prepared himself to serve his patients with the best in the art and science of dentistry.He is one of only 8 dentists in the world who has earned both these awards. There are 140,000 dentists in the U.S. Dr. Sowell lectures on cosmetic dentistry and was recently featured by CBS News as an expert on a plasma-arc whitening technique called BriteSmiles, and NBC as a cosmetic dentist. Dr. Sowell has been selected by WFAA and TXCN (the ABC affiliate in Dallas) TV stations as their network expert on cosmetic dentistry.
Dr. Sowell is also an alumni of the distinguished Pankey Institute, recognized throughout the world as one of the leading centers for advanced rehabilitative dentistry. He has studied with many of the world's best dentists, including Frank Spear, Peter Dawson and Gordon Christianson. Dr. Sowell evaluated dental products for 10 years for Dr. Christianson's Clinical Research Associates. He is active in the Dallas County Dental Society and has acted as director of continuing education, served on the scientific committee, acted as committee chairman for the Southwest Dental Conference and represented Dallas in the House of Delegates for the Texas Dental Association.
After graduating in 1981 from the number-one rated dental school in the country, The University of Texas at San Antonio, Dr. Sowell become one of only 48 graduates in the U.S. to be selected by the U.S. Army fo General Practice Residency Training. While in the service as a dentist, Dr. Sowell served as an Assistant Clinic Chief at White Sands Missile Range, receiving many commendations.
In 1985, Dr. Sowell started private practice in Plano, and he received his Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry in 1987. His Master Award followed in 1996, given in recognition of excellence in continuing education. Fewer than 1% (900 of 140,000) of the dentists in the U.S. receive this award.
Each year from 1990 to 1995, Dr. Sowell attended the L.D. Pankey Institute, where he received training in advanced reconstructive dentistry. Because he is committed to excellence in esthetic dentistry, Dr. Sowell is working toward his fellowship in the Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, a group of only 40 dentists in the world.
Since 1991, he has been one of 400 worldwide evaluators for Gordon Christenson's Clinical Research and Associates, a non-profit organization that analyzes new technology and new products.
Dr. Sowell is active in the Dallas County Dental Society and served as Continuing Education Chairman in 2000. He is a Master of the Academy of General Dentistry and maintains membership in the following organizations:

Plano dentist, Dr. Sowell specializes in restoring teeth with laser-bonded synthetic tooth structure, which is "metal free." The result is beautiful, natural-looking teeth. Having completed over 1000 hours of advanced, hands-on cosmetic dentistry with many of the leading clinicians in the world, Dr. Sowell has positioned himself on the leading edge of the 21st century and now writes and lectures about cosmetic dentistry.
Dr. Sowell started working with dental implants in 1985, first restoring them then later placing them in the jaw. In 2002 Dr. Sowell did a one year preceptorship with the University of Texas Dental School in San Antonio, then went on to study implants with Zimmer Implants in California and Nobel Biocare training programs in Houston and New Jersey. In 2005 Dr. Sowell was awarded a Fellowship in the International Congress of Implantologists in San Francisco at the annual meeting for his demonstation of sucessful implant placements. Now Dr. Sowell places and restores implants. Thus patient's do not have a go to one office to get the implant placed and another office to get it restored. Dr. Sowell can offer complete implant services in one office from mini-implants to traditional implants.
Starting in 2009 Dr.Sowell started teaching advanced reconstructive dentistry at "Spear Education" at the state of the art facility Scottsdale Center for Dentistry. About 10 times per year Dr. Sowell travels to Scottsdale, Arizonia as a visiting faculty member to act as a lead mentor in advanced reconstruction courses where experienced dentists who want to go to the next level learn to restore complex cases go. This has been an wonderful opportunity for Dr. Sowell to give back to the profession that has given so much to him.
